Tidy
One click, and your Mac desktop tidies itself.

What it does
- Click the broom in the menu bar, or press ⌃⌥T. Everything on the desktop flies into a few folders: Screenshots, Images, Documents, Videos, Data, Folders and Other. Files that belong together, like a series of scans, get their own subfolder.
- Leftovers go to Maybe Trash: exact duplicates, installers, old exports, empty folders. They wait there for 30 days, then move to the macOS Trash. Tidy never deletes anything itself.
- What you're working on stays: anything used this week, color-tagged files, aliases, and keys and certificates.
- Undo puts everything back, files and icon positions, for an hour after a tidy.
Install
- Unzip, move Tidy to Applications, and open it. A broom appears in the menu bar.
- Allow access to the Desktop folder and to Finder when macOS asks. Tidy uses Finder to line up the icons.
- If your wallpaper moves (an Aerial), also allow Screen Recording, then open Tidy again. Tidy only captures the wallpaper, to paint it under the flying icons.
Before your first tidy
- Option-click the broom and choose Preview Next Tidy… to see what would move where.
- Maybe Trash… in the same menu lists what waits in the bin, and Keep puts an item back.
- Nothing leaves your Mac. No account needed.
